Petunia, known as Zankokuran in Japan, is a boss in Bomberman '93 and Bomberman DS. She is a giant monster petunia, and she is named after the real-life petunia flower.

Description[]

Bomberman '93[]

Petunia is the boss of Blossom Planet. She begins the stage as a balled-up shroud of green leaves floating above the arena. In this state, she is invincible, can not harm Bomberman and passes through all obstacles. She spawns 4 flowers in the first stage and 3 flowers in the second stage.

After her flower-enemies are destroyed, she reveals her true form with two last flowers. In this form, she is able to move on land, she's vulnerable to hit, moves aimlessly, erases bombs when she steps on them and harms Bomberman on collision. She occasionally stops and launches 4 petals in four directions (straight or diagonally). After 3 hits, she uses 8 petals and launches them in all eight directions. The petals will harm Bomberman on collision.

Petunia takes 5 hits to defeat and yields a score of 20000 points. Upon defeat, the player will gain the second chip.

Bomberman DS[]

Petunia reappears as the sixth boss in Bomberman DS. However, the only few differences between her Bomberman '93 incarnation and her Bomberman DS incarnation is that her face is absent, but despite this disadvantage, Petunia's behavior and hit points are largely unchanged. But to make up for the lack of her face, it's replaced with thorns of her petals and a tiny red dot at the center, with sharper green leaves for her legs and her neck is covered with four thorns. In the tenth level of the first stage, a robotic version of Petunia is the main boss.

Trivia[]

  • In the comedic scene after defeating the boss in Bomberman '93, Petunia has an x-shaped bandage on her right cheek and is seen happy while Bomberman waters her, showing kindness. The scene remains unchanged between the game versions.
  • In Bomberman '93, when starting Blossom Planet, Petunia's gender is mistaken for a male due to the pronouns "he" and "his", even though she is officially female.
